The free market gets wrongly blamed for many things, and many of the examples you have given of unpopular free market capitalism are nothing of the sort

The pharmaceutical industry develops its drugs with considerable help from the taxpayer and from charities. When members of the public are asked to donate to medical research charities, they don’t realise that they are most likely paying a pharmaceutical company to do research it was going to do anyway, and could quite easily pay for out of its vast profits. Only a tiny percentage of drug company profits go into researcch, because Joe Public is hapy to pick u the bill. State subsidised universities loan their laboratories for this ‘good cause’. Subsidised students do much of the real work, pharmaceutical reps in the government funding bodies steer the taxppayers dollars towards drug development, rather than research into causes and prevention of disease, and then when the drug is developed, it becomes patent property of the drug company, sold back to the taxpayers who paid for it in the first place via heavily subsidised healthcare programs. Then the forces of the state protect the patent ‘rights’, and block foreign manufacturers from making generic versions of the drug (sometimes.

True. In Britain, big supermarkets also seem to get planning laws waived for their out of town stores. They also use their buying power to force down prices for the farmers, so that the farmers demand more subsidies. Put bluntly, nowhere in the world is the food market a free market, and food is our most basic requirement from the market. Even the New Zealand government offers price guarantees to farmers.

You mention coffee shops. It’s ironic that Starbucks and MacDonalds are so often used as examples of free market capitalism, when the American and European owned coffee firms owe their existence to tariffs on imports of roasted coffee to the developed world, forcing third world farmers to sell their coffee beans quickly in their ‘green’ and perishable state. MacDonalds likewise owes its existence to farm subsidies.

Eastern Euroean reformers? I live in Eastern Europe and don’t see any sign of free market caitalism. Business is dominated by ex communist mafia. Cartels and rice fixing are the norm, even at a local level. It is normal for instance to have three greengrocers in the same town, all owned by the same businessman.

was the thing made out metal – could you see details or

was it made out of ‘colour’ – a clear image but with no fine detail.
