Their eyes met across a crowded internet

Sometimes You Have To Be Cruel To Be Kind
There are certain types of people who constantly search the net, robotically, for references to themselves, the books or other things they have written.
If you would like them to read your blog, or make contact with you, the best thing you can do is write a scathing critique of them. Think of fishing – bait, line, hook.
Mostly this works but there is another phenomenon that kicks in sometimes – the Posse. This is when the writer (or whatever) doesn’t contact you personally but uses a deputation of people on their behalf to attack what you have written. This is ok, because the person you originally ‘scathed’ will be in the background reading anyway, but not optimum.
The best response of course is when the ‘scathed’ writes directly to you – through comments attatched to the ‘scathe’. Then there is the possibility for a discussion, an exchange of ideas.
Don’t get bogged down too much in your critique about style or substance. It’s best not to even read what you are ‘scathing’. Remember, what you are really doing is fishing. The debate comes later.
